day 3 - everyone stays home on sunday!

one would assume tokyo (the actual tokyo city) would be a very busy location. this is the wrong assumption. we rode the jr line for 30 minutes (from shinjuku to tokyo) and arrived in a very dull and quiet city. the day was chilly, foggy, and not a single bird in the sky. tokyo is the equivalent of wall street in new York. as we walked around the streets of tokyo, public workers sat on four corners of every street clocking cars and pedestrians. businessmen hurridly walked in and out of fast food restaurants to catch a quick bite. we walked aimlessly for close to two hours and luckily we found an upscale mall that caught our interest. the first floor sold delicious mochi, cakes, and other various artistically designed sweets. the basement carried an assortment of food ranging from italian, japanese, chinese, american, and a bakery. the floors above the first floor boasted a wide range of high end products such as chanel, gucci, burberry, rolex, and many more. after a few hours of window shopping inside the mall, we concluded our visit in tokyo and decided to catch a glimpse of roppongi in the day time. we took the 30 min jr line back to shinjuku and transfered on to the oeido line to roppongi for an additional 20 min. although it is written that roppongi is a popular city among foreigners, we observed an estimate of less than 10 expat/foreigner that day. from the center of roppongi, we were able to see the famous tokyo tower. we walked towards the tokyo tower untill the flashy store signs faded behind us. although the tokyo tower was massively tall and shined brightly with colorful lights, it was nothing impressive compared to the sears tower. the $895yen ticket per person to elevate to the peak was even less impressive. our night concluded with a dinner at mos burger and a train ride back to the keio hotel. a sunday in tokyo is not very heartwarming for tourists.
